Doberman Names

Choosing Doberman names is just one of the fun things about welcoming a new dog into your family.

But it can also be kind of stressful! After all, you are still just getting to know your new Dobe pup and already you have to come up with a great name for them.

The more you give yourself space and time to try out different names on your new dog, the better the naming process is likely to go.

In this article, you will find awesome inspiration for finding your Doberman’s perfect name!

Doberman Names

Dobermans as a dog breed have a reputation for being big, strong, and fiercely protective. But Dobermans have lots of other qualities too that could be great material for thinking up names.

The key to choosing a great Doberman name is to remember you will be saying it often, likely in public and in a very mixed company. So pick something you can say in a hurry five times fast – and something that won’t land you in hot water!

There are lots of different ways to approach naming your new Dobe puppy or rescue dog.

Doberman Names Tips and Tricks

As we mentioned earlier here, it is important to remember you will have to say your new Doberman’s name a lot. So you want to be comfortable with the name whether you are alone or around others.

As this thread on Doberman Talk Forums highlights, the Doberman naming process can get pretty complicated, especially if you plan on showing your new Dobe!

The American Kennel Club (AKC) explains that those long show dog names serve some very practical purposes.

Your Doberman breeder might choose the name for you

If you have your heart set on showing a champion Doberman, you may be in for a surprise in the naming department. Your breeder may insist on choosing the name for you!

Some breeders will be flexible within limits while others may insist on naming your new puppy before you even meet them.

And then the AKC also has its own show dog name checker to be sure you have chosen a name that is registration-worthy.

Each part of a show Doberman name means something

The basic rules you must abide by if you want to register your dog with the American Kennel Club:

  • You only get up to 50 characters for your Doberman’s full name including hyphens and spaces.
  • If your desired name is 37 characters or more, you have to pay an extra fee.
  • You can’t use any special characters or Roman numerals in your AKC name.
  • You can’t use your Doberman’s kennel name.
  • If 37 other AKC-registered dogs have the same name you want, you can’t use it.
  • Some words are off-limits for AKC registered dog names.
  • If your dog comes to you from another country with a name already chosen, you can’t change it for AKC purposes.

Each AKC dog has two names

Each dog registered with the American Kennel Club has two names: a long name and a “call” name, which is like a nickname.

This, of course, is to make sure the owner or trainer doesn’t have to use the full registration name in daily life!

The formal AKC registration name typically includes the kennel name and references the breed in some way.

Often breeders will pick a theme word or phrase for each litter and incorporate that into the names of each puppy from that litter.

And many breeders cycle through the alphabet to avoid choosing names that sound too similar from one litter of puppies to the next.

Now that you understand more about how to choose Doberman names for the show ring and for registration purposes, let’s dive into some neat names for your Doberman based on different categories.
